Seaworthiness Defined

by Ralph Ahseln

In as little space I can , Here's my Personal definition of "Seaworthiness". In both the Vessel and the Human passenger.. It's a simple matter of .......Heroics or Foolhardiness !

Any person aboard any device floating on a watery path .... WHO... Doesn't have a little FEAR, a great deal of RESPECT , Who, Doesn't OVER PREPARE and is CLEARLY AWARE.. May...... Drown, Burn up, be Blown into oblivion, Or simply...... Disappear. In my opinion they are NOT ..."Sea Worthy"

Any vessel upon the watery path.. May.... On any day be, Sunk, on Fire, Blown into disaster or simply...... Disappear. On THAT day.. THAT vessel was not Seaworthy...

Not heeding the simple "Rules" of good seamanship .. is, in my way of thinking... FOOLHARDY.. Being as best a Seaman as possible and voyaging with THAT.. touch of Fear.. Whether Around the World or on a Day Sail ... Is, HEROIC...

Understanding the "Tools" on which you commit your life and well being .. Is Seaman like, Seaworthy and Heroic.

Richard Henderson's book "Singlehanded Sailing" .. Speaks of several .. World travelers, Who were Poor Seaman and who were Just LUCKY... Not Heroic....

Josh Slocum was , on his Circumnavigation ..... Heroic.
Josh Slocum ., on his trip to the Caribbean...was probably ... Foolhardy.

I Pity the ..foolhardy
I celebrate the.... Heroes
as Seaman.. THEY are .....Worthy of the Sea.
