This page describes:
- Where I installed a Humminbird Fishfinder
I decided to mount it under the v-berth in the section just forward
of the port-a-poti. That would put in on the boats centerline and
clear of any disturbed water generated by the keel. The display is
mounted in the cockpit on the starboard side bulkhead.
- How I installed it
This was done by my self while the boat was in the water. Originally I bolted the
transducer inside a four inch PVC pipe so that the transducer would be
about an eighth of an inch off the hull. The pipe was then siliconed in
place on the centerline just forward of the aft end of the compartment.
I then filled the pipe with water and placed a plastic lid over the pipe.
The wires were then led forward to the electrical panel and to the
display.
Now I have the transducer epoxied directly to the hull. It is in the same
location, but without the PVC pipe.
An alternative to epoxy comes from Bob Endicott:
Get a toilet bowl wax ring (less than a buck at Home Depot). Break off a fourth
to a third of it (not critical, just eyeball it), knead it a little then roll it
into a ball, place it where you want it, then press the transducer into it,
smushing the majority of the wax out the edges. If you're happy with it, leave it
be.... it'll stay just fine. If you don't like the aim or the performance, it's
easy to move. The wax won't hurt you, but surgical gloves can make the process neater.
I should point out, though, that this idea came from Fleet 77 member and sailor
extraordinaire Paul "Hooligan" Gallant. Credit for cleverness is all his. I am
merely passing it along. (editors note: This wax has a melting point of 150° F. So
it should not melt in normal conditions.)

The wire from the transducer to the display unit runs under the starboard
side cabin seat. A hole was drilled in the starboard side cabin/cockpit
bulkhead for the display.
- Where I purchased the materials
The Humminbird was bought through SailNet
and the PVC pipe and plastic lid were bought at Lowes hardware store.
